Screenomics asks for your consent to use your data to learn how people use their smartphone:

1. What media content study participants are exposed to in daily life,
2. how participants interact (or not) with the media content they are exposed to, and
3. the interplay between media content exposures and interactions is related to participants’ geographic location.

Prominent Disclosure of Personal and Sensitive User Data

This Statement of Collection explains:

1. what information is collected from users through the Screenomics app;
2. how that information is used; and
3. the measures that are taken to keep the information safe.

Q1. What Information Is Collected?

The app collects a sample of:

1. Anything that is on your screen, for example, home screens, websites, photos, and messages that you send and receive. The persons sending or replying to these messages, photos, etc., may also be recorded (i.e., screenshots of your smartphone screen);
2. the ways you interact with the media content (i.e., scrolls and clicks); and
3. your real time location (i.e., longitude and latitude coordinates of GPS). Content and interaction data are collected only when your smartphone is in use, while location data are also collected when the smartphone is not in use.

Q2. How is the Collected Information Transmitted and Used?

All of the data that we gather about your device usage will be kept confidential. We will take precautions to prevent others from learning about your participation in this study. We will not use your name to identify your data file, and the data will be encrypted and stored on a secure Stanford server and storage system that will not be accessible to anyone outside of our research project. The  collected information (screenshots, scrolls and clicks, and locations) is only used for study research purposes – to understand how people use smartphones in daily life – and will not  be shared with any third-parties

Q3. What Measures Are Taken to Keep Information Safe?

We will not use your name to identify your data file, and the data will be encrypted and stored on a secure Stanford server and storage system that will not be accessible to anyone outside of our research project.
